A Native American traditional way of using smoke to purify a space is through the practice of smudging. Smudging is a ritual of burning herbs and using the smoke produced to alter/enhance energy for self or others, or to cleanse the energy of a space (i.e. home) Many herbs can be used for smudging rituals, most common ones including sage, cedar and sweetgrass. 

Sage is used as a part of many Native American ceremonies because of its purification powers. The shamans used dried sage plants on their fires as a ritual of calling upon ancestral spirits. Any conflict, anger, illness or evil was absorbed by the sage smoke and released or cleansed from the energy field of a person.
